All, David Patterson last week became the first blind well legally blind governor of New York. He has already confessed to participating in multiple affairs. Does this speak volumes of his character? Anyone cares that he represents the blind community in the public eye for right now?

I wish the personal lives of these public figures didn't have to come out. Anyways, it happened a long time ago and the fact thathe's blind is secondary to these news reporters.

Unfortunately a lot of people do. If they didn't, then magazines like People and rags like National Inquirer and all the celebrity oriented TV shows would not exist. Let's hope this guy is a good enough governor that people will forget he is blind.

It's probibly because he's got a disability his past got dragged out like that. Most personal lives would be left alone, but minorities will always be torn apart in office at first. Happened before and will again.

Has nothing to do with him having a disability. His personal life will be dragged around because he's in the public's eye. That is all.

Agreed. Every public figure, sight or no sight, has their personal lives dug up by the press, since they r looking for something to report. It's great that a blind, well legally blind person, I should say, has assumed the ranks of a high office. I hope that people don't loose sight of that.

Damia, Patterson wouldn't even be governor right now if Spitzer's personal life hadn't gotten dragged out into the public eye. And Spitzer is sighted. So is Bill Clinton, and who could forget his personal life? So, blindness has absolutely nothing to do with it. It comes of being a politician in this day and age.

However, you are right about one thing. Patterson will be under an extra level of scrutiny due to his blindness. He stands in a unique position to make the blind community look very good, or very bad, depending on how he handles things. However, he is definitley a high partial. Does he even use a cane, read Braille, etc? Will the media really even perceive him as blind?
